Last year, we had an eight hour layover in Tokyo. We thought, great, we’ll have time to see some sights! It will be amazing, and it will tire the kids out so they sleep on the plane.
Well, we were right about the amazing sights. We were not right about the kids sleeping, but that’s another story for another day.
Kanagawa is just south of Tokyo. We hopped on a train at the airport and were there in about 20 minutes. We decided to visit the port town of Yokohama and we did it with just a few hours. I didn’t even research anything before we got there, we just walked around and saw what we could near the station. I’d love to go back and visit again when I have time to take a closer look at the destinations, but we still had a nice time. For now, here are a few of the things we were able to see in just a few short hours!
The Landmark Tower
As the second tallest building in Japan, this skyscraper is impressive and hard to get in the frame!! Inside, there’s a shopping mall, and you can ride all the way to the top for the Sky Garden. Or, if you’re just doing layover tourism like us, you can just stop and snap a few shots.

Who would think to put a museum in a ship? Apparently, the people of Yokohama! This boat stays docked in Yokohama Harbor and includes a museum as well as a “sailor training school” where they will teach you how to sail like the originally sailors of this gorgeous ship.

Cosmo World Ferris Wheel
The first thing you will see in Yokohama Harbor is this enormous ferris wheel. It’s actually inside of Cosmo World, a Yokohama amusement park and is over 110 meters tall. We spotting it across the harbor on our way to the Yokohama Hard Rock Cafe.
